Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) 24/25: How installers can monetise batteries
Updated: Nov 11
The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS), introduced by the UK’s National Electricity System Operator (NESO) in 2022, helps balance the electricity grid by incentivising consumers to reduce energy consumption or export energy to the grid during these times, known as DFS events. By participating, consumers are getting paid for helping stabilise the grid and for reducing reliance on fossil fuel power plants.
Under the new Procurement Rules, starting in December 2024, DFS is transitioning to more frequent events throughout the year instead of just during the winter. This opens up more opportunities to unlock more value from assets like batteries, which can be automated, but it also requires a higher level of sophistication to identify, orchestrate and respond to these events.

DFS automation for batteries and other assets
In order to automate DFS participation for your battery fleet you need to have in place some core technical capabilities such as:
Real-time asset monitoring: Continuously tracking each battery's status and charge levels.
Forecasting energy patterns: Predicting solar generation and consumption to assess how much energy can be imported/exported and when.
Profitability estimation against electricity tariff: Evaluating the optimal price for participating in a DFS event versus using the energy for self consumption.
Charging schedule automation: Automatically adjusting the charging and discharging schedule for each battery to maximise both bill savings and DFS income.
Automated dispatch: During the DFS event, automatically dispatching the fleet of batteries to deliver the required flexibility.
Post-event settlement: Collecting metering data to verify the batteries' performance and ensure owners are paid accurately.
By bringing together the above components you can deliver optimal charging to transform the profitability of your batteries both at the individual level and in aggregate.
